Halo: Reach
Halo: Reach is a prequel telling the tragic story of the fall of the planet Reach, humanity's last bastion before the Covenant invasion. The player commands a member of the elite Noble Team commando unit and knows from the start that the mission will end in defeat - yet the game manages to portray heroism and sacrifice with an emotional power the series had never offered before. Noble Team was made up of six distinctive characters, and the player, in the role of a rookie, moved among them as part of a cohesive unit rather than as a lone hero, giving the story an unusually human dimension.
Bungie polished the gameplay mechanics to perfection here: new abilities like sprint, active camouflage, or jetpack added tactical depth, and the fighting against the Covenant in open terrain ranks among the best in the series. Reach also offered a brief space sequence in a fighter cockpit, something entirely new for the main series. The graphics engine was noticeably improved over Halo 3, with more realistic lighting and more detailed environments, while visually the game leaned on cold, gloomy colors and open mountain plains underscoring the feeling of a losing war. The Forge editor was significantly expanded, allowing maps to be built with far greater freedom than before.
Multiplayer offered an elaborate Credits system and armor customization that inspired progression systems in later shooters. The Firefight mode for cooperative survival against waves of enemies became a beloved companion to the story, especially thanks to the ability to finely tune the rules and difficulty of individual waves. Reach was the last Halo game developed by Bungie before handing the series over to 343 Industries, and many fans still consider it the studio's peak. Critics and players alike praised the courage to show an inexorable defeat as the main storyline, an unprecedented move for major AAA series at the time. The game sold millions of copies and remains a symbol of the end of one era of the Xbox 360.
