Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was created by BioWare, a studio that had already built a reputation as masters of story-driven RPG narrative thanks to earlier titles like Baldur's Gate, and the result became one of the finest stories the Star Wars brand has ever received. The plot is set roughly four thousand years before the events of the film saga, during the great war between the Republic and the Sith, which gave the creators the freedom to build their own mythology, characters, and locations without being tied to film canon and its expectations.
The combat system is based on the rules of the d20 tabletop game adapted for real-time-with-pause play, where the player issues commands and then watches them being carried out, similar to earlier BioWare computer RPGs built on the Dungeons & Dragons license. The player assembles a three-member party, chooses classes and abilities, and gradually builds their own lightsaber from found crystals, one of the most powerful moments in the game for franchise fans. A key element is the light side/dark side of the Force system, which genuinely affects available dialogue options, abilities, and character appearance, and the player's decisions carry weight, since they shape not only the story but also how companions and the galaxy's inhabitants treat the hero. The game contains one of the most famous plot twists in video game history, one that fundamentally reshapes everything the player thought they knew about their character, and it remains among the most frequently cited moments in the genre.
An unforgettable party of companions, including the sarcastic droid HK-47 and the loyal Wookiee Zaalbar, tense lightsaber duels, and freedom of choice made KOTOR a timeless classic that Star Wars and RPG fans alike still rank among the genre's finest achievements and the benchmark against which later entries in the series and its newer adaptations are measured. Despite its dated graphics, the game retains its power chiefly through its dialogue and music, which manage to evoke the atmosphere of the films even on modest hardware.
