A launch-window arcade racer that gave police chases their iconic modern form.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted was among the Xbox 360 launch titles of 2005 and quickly became one of the most beloved arcade racers of the entire generation. The player takes on the role of a driver fighting their way up a ranked list of fifteen rivals, the so-called Blacklist, in the fictional city of Rockport, and besides classic circuit and sprint races also faces intense police pursuits. It was precisely these police chases — full of spectacular roadblocks, wrecked patrol cars, spike strips, and adrenaline-fueled escapes through shortcuts across parks or construction sites — that gave the game its distinctive identity and set it apart from rival racing series of the time.

Gameplay was built around tuning and visually customizing your fleet of cars, career progression through the ranks of the Blacklist, and a Bounty system that rewarded aggressive, risk-taking driving against the police with ever-harsher countermeasures, from helicopters to roadblocks. On Xbox 360, the game benefited from significantly improved graphics compared to previous-generation versions, with smoother movement, sharper textures and a more detailed rendering of the city, which breathed the atmosphere of American road culture, complemented by an energetic soundtrack of rock and hip-hop tracks from artists of the era and live-action cutscenes between the various rivals.

Contemporary reception was exceptionally warm, and the title quickly became one of the reasons players picked up a new console right in its first year. It shaped the direction of the entire Need for Speed series for several years to come, including later attempts to relaunch the police-chase concept, and to this day is regarded as one of the high points of the arcade street-racing genre. Players return to it for nostalgia, straightforward fun, and iconic police chases that became synonymous with the game itself, for a generation that experienced it as their first title on a new console.

Why play it: For straightforward fun, iconic police chases, and nostalgia for the games that defined the console's early days, it remains one of the high points of arcade street racing to this day.
