Midnight Club: Los Angeles
Midnight Club: Los Angeles from Rockstar San Diego was released in 2008 and took players into an open, faithfully recreated Los Angeles, where illegal street races took place across the entire city from the coast to downtown, with its own visual identity of a nighttime city bathed in neon lighting and reflections on wet asphalt. The game continued the older installments of the street-racing series, but thanks to the new console generation offered a much more densely populated and lively environment with heavy traffic, street life, graffiti culture, and finely detailed districts of the metropolis from Hollywood to the harbor areas.
The lineup also included a gallery of dozens of licensed vehicles that could be gradually unlocked as the player earned money from illegal races. Gameplay was built around free movement through the city between individual races, which could be launched directly from the open world by accepting a challenge from a passing rival, on tuning cars and motorcycles, and on a police pursuit system that complemented the classic rivalry between drivers for prestige and money. The game also offered online multiplayer, in which players could meet directly in the open world and spontaneously race against each other, which was a fairly innovative approach to a racing game's social component at the time of release and foreshadowed later shared online worlds.
Critics and players alike praised especially the dense atmosphere of nighttime Los Angeles, the smooth feel of driving, and the wide selection of licensed vehicles from motorcycles to supercars. Midnight Club: Los Angeles is still remembered today as one of the last major installments of the series and as a title that showed how convincingly an open world can work even in a purely racing context without the need for a complex story. Even with the passage of years, the game feels surprisingly alive and playable thanks to its atmosphere, music selection, and density of detail, regardless of the fact that its online component has long been a thing of the past.
Why play it: Thanks to the dense atmosphere of nighttime Los Angeles, smooth driving, and a rich selection of licensed vehicles, it remains one of the last great installments in the series, playable even without the online component.
