Need for Speed: ProStreet
Need for Speed: ProStreet from 2007 marked a significant change of direction for the series. Instead of the illegal street races that defined the previous Underground and Most Wanted entries, the game moved the action to legal closed circuits, where the player competes in four disciplines – circuit Grip races, drag racing, drift, and the Speed Challenge autocross. The career progresses through all types of competitions, the player builds a reputation among individual racing "crews," and invests earned money into car modifications through the Autosculpt system, which allowed visually shaping the bodywork and bumpers according to one's own vision. For the first time in the series, car damage was also realistically modeled – bent panels and disrupted aerodynamics after a crash noticeably changed the car's handling on the track, and in extreme cases a serious crash could leave the car completely wrecked. The career was accompanied by a custom music selection via EA Trax and online multiplayer, in which players competed in the same disciplines as in single-player and compared their times and results with each other.
Alongside PC and PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 was one of the main platforms the game was developed for, and it was released simultaneously with them. In terms of content, the version was identical to the other releases – the same tracks, car roster, and career structure including the Autosculpt system, with no exclusive content. Controls were handled by a standard gamepad, and the game also supported select racing wheels compatible with the console, as well as online multiplayer via Xbox Live.
The differences from PC and PlayStation 3 were thus limited to the usual platform variations caused by the controller and the performance of the hardware at the time, not to what the player could actually play – the career, disciplines, the Autosculpt system, and the car roster remained unchanged across all three versions, including online multiplayer and leaderboards via Xbox Live, where players competed in the same four disciplines as in the single-player career.
Why play it: With exactly the same content as on PC and PlayStation 3 – career, disciplines, Autosculpt, and the car roster – including online leaderboards via Xbox Live, the Xbox 360 version differs only in minor platform details.
