2005 tuner racing with police chases; the goal is to fight your way through the Blacklist.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted is a 2005 racing game that combined street-car tuning with police chases in a single open city. The player starts with no car and no reputation, and the goal is to climb the Blacklist of fifteen most-wanted racers all the way to the top. Each duel for a position requires not just won races but also so-called pursuit points, so the game directly pushes the player into conflict with the police. The framing story about a stolen car and betrayal is simple, but the live-action footage with its strong bluish filter gives it exactly the swaggering atmosphere that the tuning scene of the era had.

The driving model is arcade-style but has a surprisingly well-readable sense of weight; cars slide, heavy vehicles throw themselves into corners, and nitro gives a short, powerful kick. The heart of the fun is the police chases, which escalate from a single patrol car all the way up to heavily armored units, roadblocks, and a helicopter. The city is dotted with traps that can be triggered, from collapsing towers to gas stations, and a well-timed activation can take out an entire convoy at once. On top of that there's deeper tuning, visual customization, and racing disciplines ranging from sprints and circuits to drag racing and checkpoint runs.

On PC the game ran smoothly even on then-average machines, and its visuals, with pronounced motion blur and an overexposed sky, became a signature look for the whole series. The engine sounds are loud and aggressive, the soundtrack mixes rock with electronic music, and it contributes a great deal to the sense of speed. Reception was very positive, and Most Wanted long remained a fan-favorite entry that later games in the series consciously referenced. Today it looks visually dated, and the color filter is intense to the point of fatigue, but the driving itself and the tension of the chases still work. For a lot of players it remains the entry against which every other Need for Speed is measured.
