A shift away from simulation toward exotic supercars and flashy spectacle over physics.

Need for Speed II is the second installment in Electronic Arts' popular racing series, which, unlike the simulation-leaning first game, placed the emphasis on exotic supercars, fictional and futuristic vehicles, and visually striking environments. Players could choose from cars like the Ferrari, Lamborghini, or McLaren F1 and race on tracks set in exotic locations ranging from tropical islands to alpine mountains, with the game emphasizing speed and eye-catching spectacle rather than precise physics simulation, which the series on PlayStation would return to only in later installments.

Compared to the first game, less emphasis was placed on detailed simulation settings, and new game modes focused on fun were added, including the option to race with fictional concept cars that never existed in the real world and served as a glimpse into the future of automotive design. The visual presentation on PlayStation was impressive for its time, the tracks were varied and colorful, though the technical execution had to make compromises compared to the more powerful PC version, which ran at higher resolution and with smoother animation. The soundtrack rounded out the impression of exotic, relaxed travel by fast cars around the world, rather than the tension of a tight racing duel.

Critics received the game largely positively, praising mainly the car selection and the attractive environments, though some reviewers missed the depth and simulation elements of the first game. Need for Speed II helped the series find a broader audience by steering it toward a more arcade-like approach to racing, and it pointed future installments toward an emphasis on attractiveness and fun over raw realism. To this day it is seen as a transitional point where the series began to take on the shape it would become famous for in later years, both on PC and on consoles, where it gradually built one of the genre's longest-running brands.

Why play it: For players interested in the birth of the series' arcade-leaning direction and its attractive selection of cars and environments, even though the depth and simulation elements of the first game are missing here.
