Need for Speed: High Stakes
Need for Speed: High Stakes from 1999 (released in Europe under the title Road Challenge) is the fifth entry in the famous racing series from EA Seattle. Compared to previous arcade-style entries, it adds an emphasis on vehicle damage and a new Career mode, in which the player gradually earns money to buy and upgrade cars, which pushed the series closer to a more structured, endurance-oriented style of play and foreshadowed the direction Need for Speed took in subsequent entries at the turn of the millennium.
The key new feature is the damage system - in a hard crash, a car can for the first time in the series lose performance or be completely destroyed, which raises the tension in high-speed clashes with the police and forces the player to think twice about every risky maneuver. High Stakes' career mode links together regular races, police chases, and so-called Getaway drives, where the player transports a stolen car past a persistent patrol and tries to deliver it to the finish intact. The PlayStation version also benefits from the DualShock controller and its vibration, which heightens the feel of impacts, skids, and driving over uneven surfaces, delivering a different, more physical experience than the concurrent PC version. The car roster includes both licensed vehicles and fictional police specials, adding variety to the game and letting the player choose between speed, durability, or handling depending on the type of race or chase currently underway.
Why play it: High Stakes is an ideal choice for fans of nineties arcade racing who want to experience the moment when the Need for Speed series first dealt with the real risk of losing your car. The combination of police chases, career progression, and satisfying body damage makes it one of the most memorable entries of the series' early era and a good introduction for anyone who wants to see the roots of today's racing titles. Despite being an older title, its emphasis on risk and the consequences of a crash still plays surprisingly fresh today.
