Delta squad descends beneath the surface of Sera straight into the Locust homeland; riding a giant Brumak was added.

Gears of War 2 expanded the dark sci-fi world of the planet Sera with a larger story, in which Delta Force descends deep underground to stop the Locust right in their own homeland. The game built on the successful cover system and brutal chainsaw melee combat, but added more open level design, a ride on the giant worm Brumak, and epic moments of entire cities being destroyed. It was newly possible to use a stunned enemy as a living shield and slowly advance forward with them, adding a dose of especially brutal tactics to combat.

Firefights were designed to constantly push the player out of cover - enemies flanked from the sides, grenades could be stuck directly onto walls, and open scenes alternated with the enclosed corridors of underground nests. Cooperation remained a key pillar: the campaign can be played from start to finish with a partner and offers synchronized actions that require genuine teamwork. Multiplayer grew to include the Horde mode, in which players face fifty waves of enemies, which became enormously popular and inspired similar modes in dozens of other titles. Visually, the game pushed Unreal Engine 3 even further, with larger environments, denser effects, and more imposing bosses that often took up a substantial part of the screen. The pacing was also noticeably improved: calmer passages between battles gave room for squad dialogue, making the game feel more cohesive than a sequence of isolated firefights.

Story-wise, the characterization of Dom Santiago and the tragedy surrounding his wife Maria deepened, giving the series an emotional weight the first game lacked. Critics praised in particular the scope and variety of content as well as the technical execution. Gears of War 2 sold millions of copies and cemented the series' position as one of the main pillars of the Xbox 360's exclusive lineup, while the Horde mode influenced future cooperative wave-based shooters across the entire industry.
