Grand Theft Auto V
Grand Theft Auto V delivered Rockstar Games' most ambitious open world at the twilight of the Xbox 360 era, set in the fictional Los Santos and the surrounding countryside inspired by Southern California. The game uniquely interwove the stories of three protagonists – former bank robber Michael, street gangster Franklin, and the psychologically unpredictable Trevor – between whom the player could switch at any time on the fly, enabling multi-layered storytelling of major heists from different perspectives simultaneously. Switching was handled with a smooth camera pull upward and swoop down to another part of the map, so a technically demanding trick played like a film cut, and each character had their own special ability, from slowing down time during gunfights to increased combat resilience.
Rockstar North pushed the RAGE engine toward a more detailed, varied environment encompassing mountains, desert, and ocean, with aerial, nautical, and underwater activities all possible. The driving model was considerably refined compared to its predecessor and cars handled more nimbly, turning a mere drive across the city into entertainment in its own right. Heist missions required planning, choosing an approach, and team cooperation, with the choice between a stealthy and a loud approach, plus hired accomplices with different costs and abilities, affecting both the course of the action and the final share of the loot. Alongside this, the world offered tennis, golf, yoga, races, and hunting, so it could also be played as a collection of leisure activities.
The online mode GTA Online, launched shortly after release, became a phenomenal long-term project bringing Rockstar billions in revenue over the following decade. Critics praised the scope, humor, satire of American society, and technical execution pushed to the limits of the old console generation, where the game required installation from a second disc yet still ran remarkably stably. GTA V became one of the most commercially successful media products in history, with sales exceeding one hundred fifty million copies, and definitively confirmed Rockstar as the leader in open-world creation.
