A dying Wild West and former outlaw John Marston forced to hunt down his old associates.

Red Dead Redemption transplanted Rockstar Games' open-world formula into the dying Wild West of the early twentieth century, telling the story of John Marston, a former outlaw forced by federal agents to hunt down his old associates in exchange for his family's freedom. Rockstar San Diego created a vast, atmospheric landscape stretching from deserts to the mountains of Mexico, full of dynamic random encounters, wildlife hunting, and lonely settlements that perfectly captured the melancholy of a vanishing West. Random events were never mere decoration – ambushed stagecoaches, snakebites, or a plea for help from a suspicious stranger constantly forced the player to decide whether to stop, ride on, or turn the situation to their advantage.

Combat used the Dead Eye system for slow-motion time and precise aiming, while riding and caring for a horse gave the game a unique sense of pace distinct from the urban games of the GTA series. Traveling from one end of the map to the other took long minutes, and that slowness was intentional: the landscape had time to transform, the weather to turn, and the player had time to listen to the wind and distant singing. Beyond the main storyline, the world offered poker, dice games, herb gathering, hunting legendary animals, and chasing outlaws who could be brought in alive or dead. The story, full of moral ambiguity and the protagonist's tragic fate, ranks among the best-written in video game history, and its ending remains one of the most discussed moments of the decade.

Online multiplayer offered a free-roaming world for group competitions and chases, and a standalone expansion later turned the entire map into infected zombie territory with its own campaign. Critics showered the game with superlatives and Game of the Year awards, emphasizing its atmosphere, storytelling, and musical score, whose entrance during the first crossing into Mexico ranks among the most-cited musical moments in the medium. Red Dead Redemption sold millions of copies and paved the way for a future sequel that further developed the western open-world genre to even greater perfection.
