Rockstar North – obaly her studia

Rockstar North is a Scottish development studio based in Edinburgh that is the main creator of the Grand Theft Auto series. The studio carries on the legacy of the earlier DMA Design team and is responsible for the entries that defined the entire open-world action genre — from Vice City through San Andreas to Grand Theft Auto V, one of the commercially most successful entertainment productions in history. Rockstar North belongs to publisher Rockstar Games and parent group Take-Two Interactive, and its games are known for expansive open worlds, a satirical view of American society, and technical ambition that has repeatedly pushed the boundaries of what current consoles and computers could handle.

History

The studio's roots trace back to the Dundee-based company DMA Design, which became famous in the eighties and nineties for the platformer Lemmings and later for the first Grand Theft Auto, which introduced a top-down view of criminal mayhem in an open city and gave players unprecedented freedom to choose between obeying the law and breaking it. After being acquired by publisher Take-Two and folded into the newly formed Rockstar Games label at the end of the nineties, the studio was renamed Rockstar North and shifted its creative focus to the GTA series, which it also transformed into a fully three-dimensional form.

The breakthrough moment was Grand Theft Auto III, one of the first titles to bring the open-world concept into three-dimensional space with a free-moving camera, immediately followed by Vice City, set in a fictional version of 1980s Miami, and San Andreas, with a sprawling state inspired by California and Nevada. These entries catapulted the series among the best-selling brands in the games industry and also showcased the studio's signature style — sprawling maps inspired by real American regions, an elaborate soundtrack featuring licensed music from period radio stations, and dark humor aimed at pop culture and American society.

With the arrival of Grand Theft Auto IV, set in the fictional Liberty City inspired by New York, the studio focused on a more realistic take on story, characters, and vehicle physics. The following Grand Theft Auto V then took the open-world concept to a previously unseen scale thanks to three playable protagonists and the city of Los Santos, inspired by Los Angeles and its surroundings. The game was released gradually across several console generations as well as on PC and became one of the commercially most successful entertainment titles ever, partly thanks to the online multiplayer mode GTA Online, which the studio, together with other Rockstar Games teams, has long expanded with new content, activities, and vehicles.

Key figures

The studio carries on the legacy of David Jones, co-founder of DMA Design and a key figure behind the creation of both the first Grand Theft Auto and the earlier hit Lemmings, even though he was no longer involved in later work under the Rockstar North name and left the company shortly after the studio's renaming. The longtime face of Rockstar North itself was Leslie Benzies, who led the studio for many years and took part in the production leadership of the development of key entries in the series from Grand Theft Auto III through Grand Theft Auto V, before the paths of Benzies and Rockstar Games parted after years of collaboration.

Present

Rockstar North remains the main development studio of the Grand Theft Auto series within Rockstar Games and continues to focus on expanding Grand Theft Auto V and its online component, while also working on further entries in the series for the coming generation of players. Even after more than two decades, the studio maintains its position at the technological forefront among developers of open game worlds.
