Dead Rising
Dead Rising bet on a completely original concept – journalist Frank West gets trapped in the massive Willamette shopping mall overrun by zombie hordes and must uncover the truth behind the outbreak within a strictly ticking in-game clock. Capcom built its gameplay around a massive number of zombies on screen at once, allowing the player to slaughter hundreds of the undead with almost any object found in the mall, from a chainsaw to a shopping cart to a rubber duck, giving the game its own distinctive black humor. The mall functioned as a connected whole with no loading between floors, so fleeing the horde could take you through a café, a toy store, and the roof.
A strict time limit and a real countdown of hours created unique pressure, forcing the player to plan the rescue of survivors and the completion of tasks according to a precise schedule, or lose them for good. Rescued civilians also had to be personally escorted to the safe room, meaning leading terrified people through a horde, handing them a weapon, or carrying them on your back. A camera allowing the player to document horrors and grotesque situations for points reflected Frank's profession as a photojournalist and added another layer of interaction with the world. Experience carried over even after death or restarting the story, so repeated playthroughs were part of the design, not a punishment. Bosses in the form of psychotic survivors driven insane by the pressure of the apocalypse offered intense and unpredictable battles.
Critics praised the ambition and the technical achievement of displaying hundreds of enemies at once, though the strict time system, the single save slot, and the small text on period televisions divided players' opinions. Dead Rising became a cult classic and the foundation of a successful series that defined the open-world zombie action genre on consoles. To this day it stands as one of the best demonstrations of what the new Xbox 360 hardware brought – not a prettier picture, but crowds that older hardware could never have handled.
