A classic turn-based JRPG by Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of Final Fantasy, about an immortal warrior.

Lost Odyssey was created under the direction of Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of the legendary Final Fantasy series, bringing a classic turn-based JRPG to the Xbox 360's exclusive lineup at a time when the genre was a rarity on the console. The story follows Kaim, an immortal warrior suffering from lost memories, who has wandered for a thousand years through a world convulsed by the development of magical technology reminiscent of the industrial revolution. Around him gathers a group of other immortals and ordinary mortals, and the tension between those with endless time and those whose time is running out forms the emotional backbone of the entire game.

The game combined traditional turn-based combat with an innovative Ring system requiring timed button presses to strengthen attacks, adding an action element to an otherwise classic JRPG formula. Immortal characters, moreover, did not learn skills on their own – they picked them up from their mortal companions, so party composition also affected the heroes' long-term development. Positioning characters in front and back rows determined defense and damage, turning positioning into a tactical layer the game kept forcing you to reconsider. A unique element was the so-called Thousand Years of Dreams – short literary stories revealing fragments of Kaim's lost memories through written text interspersed with the gameplay, bringing unusual literary depth to the genre and moving many readers to tears without a single image.

The music was composed by the legendary Nobuo Uematsu, giving the game an emotionally rich score, and the visual treatment with its cinematic sequences was among the most ambitious on the console, even at the cost of a scope spread across several discs. Critics especially praised the emotional storytelling and music, though the game's pacing was slow for some players and battle loading times dragged. Lost Odyssey remains one of the most significant JRPGs on the Xbox 360 and proof that the classic genre had a firm place on Microsoft's console.
