A near-solo metroidvania by Dean Dodrill; the hand-drawn art still charms today.

Dust: An Elysian Tail is a metroidvania emphasizing fast action and storytelling, created almost single-handedly by American developer Dean Dodrill under the small studio Humble Hearts. The game launched on Xbox Live Arcade in 2012 and immediately caught players' attention with hand-drawn visuals reminiscent of an animated film, which felt unusually rich and fluid for the console at the time. The main hero Dust wakes up without memories, accompanied by a talking sword-like weapon and a fox companion named Fidget, and gradually uncovers his origin in a world full of anthropomorphic animal races where various cultures and factions intertwine in complex relationships.

The combat system builds on a combination of melee attacks, dodges, and magic abilities that expand as the game progresses, enabling increasingly flashy combo attacks against dozens of enemies at once. Exploring the sprawling map is rewarded with upgrades, side quests, and item crafting, so the game combines the pace of an action arcade title with the depth of classic metroidvanias, rewarding players who return to previously visited areas with new abilities. A soundtrack composed specifically for the game gives each area a distinctive atmosphere and, together with an emotional, often melancholic story, creates an unusually personal experience for the genre.

Upon release, Dust: An Elysian Tail earned broad praise for the scope of a work essentially created by one person and became one of the most successful independent titles on Xbox Live Arcade. Its impact lies mainly in proving that even a small team can deliver a graphically and content-rich game on console comparable to larger productions. Today the game is remembered as one of the high points of the XBLA creative wave and still works as a satisfying story and gameplay experience that holds up even against newer metroidvanias.

Why play it: For the scope and quality of a work created essentially by one person, it ranks among the high points of the independent Xbox Live Arcade wave and still holds up as a satisfying metroidvania.
