A return to the series' metroidvania roots, but built for up to seven players in co-op at once.

Castlevania: Harmony of Despair is a co-op-focused entry in the famous Castlevania series, released by Konami in 2010 on Xbox Live Arcade as a return to the metroidvania genre that made the series famous. The game combines familiar characters and settings from several previous entries into sprawling, interconnected maps that players traverse either alone or in co-op with up to six other players online. The goal of each mission is usually to reach a designated point on the map or defeat a boss before the time limit runs out, which sets the game apart from the series' more traditional, slower, exploration-focused entries.

The player chooses from several characters known from older Castlevania games, each with their own arsenal of weapons, spells, and playstyle, from the classic whip of the Belmont clan to the magic and sword attacks of the series' other heroes. Co-op play requires coordination when splitting up enemies, collecting items, and advancing through the map together, while solo play puts greater emphasis on route planning, inventory management, and a more careful approach to the map. Visually, the game continues the two-dimensional, finely drawn style of previous entries in the series, though with a somewhat stripped-down presentation dictated by its multiplayer-focused design.

Critically, the game received mixed reviews, with fans of the series praising the nostalgic fan service and co-op fun, while some reviewers criticized the simplified mission structure compared to the classic entries. Even so, it found a loyal community of players thanks to online cooperation and later downloadable expansions adding more playable characters and maps. Today it is seen as an unusual, experimental detour for the series, one that showed how the classic Castlevania formula could be adapted to a multiplayer format without completely abandoning its signature visual style.

Why play it: For series fans craving co-op fun and nostalgic fan service, even though the missions are noticeably simplified compared to the classic entries.
