Uncharted Waters: New Horizons
Uncharted Waters: New Horizons is a maritime adventure and trading strategy in one, and it's among the most beloved games Koei ever made. The player picks one of several captains, each with their own story and goal — from treasure hunting through restoring family honor to purely explorative ambitions — and sails out into the world of the early modern era, where ports from Lisbon to Nagasaki lie open to be explored.
Gameplay rests on three pillars. The first is trade: you buy cheap, sail far, and sell dear, with prices reacting to what you've dumped on the market where. The second is combat — naval battles that take wind and distance into account, or switching to man-to-man combat on deck. The third is exploration, where clues from taverns and libraries send you searching for unknown capes, cities, and monuments. Above it all looms fleet management, supplies, wages, and crew morale, because hunger and disease sink an expedition more reliably than enemy cannons. Yet the game never pushes you anywhere: you can spend years dealing purely in spices, work as a cartographer for the royal court, or turn pirate and live off other people's cargo. Each captain's goals serve more as a guideline than an obligation, which is exactly why every playthrough tells a different story. Progress also unlocks naturally, with better ships and new maps.
On the PC-98, the game felt like a huge, open world map full of small details, with painted portraits of characters and ports alike. The soundtrack, with its distinctive themes for each region, ranks among Koei's most memorable work of all. New Horizons had an enormous influence in Japan and Korea, where the series eventually led to an online sequel, and it's still cited today as a model open game in which the player decides for themselves what to make a living from. Anyone who enjoys calm building and maps that slowly fill in will find one of the platform's very best games here.

The NEC PC-98 version was a Japanese computer original that could fully exploit local hardware - graphics and sound built on FM synthesis typical of Japanese machines of the era - giving it a richer period soundtrack and more text describing each captain's story. The Super Nintendo conversion had to adapt control from mouse and keyboard to a gamepad, simplify text menus to fit cartridge space, and localize the game for western audiences, which meant trimming and adjusting some of the text. The console version is more approachable thanks to its friendlier, controller-based interface and reached a much wider audience outside Japan. If you want the richest, most original experience, go for the PC-98; if you prefer comfortable gamepad controls, choose the SNES version.
