PlatinumGames injected a cover shooter with the frantic pace of a rocket-powered slide.

Vanquish is PlatinumGames' answer to the cover-shooter craze: it took that genre's structure and injected it with a speed the genre had never seen before. The player controls a government agent in an ARS combat suit who can rocket-slide across the battlefield on his knees, dodge into slow motion, and flow seamlessly between cover, sliding, and shooting. The plot about a space station, an energy weapon, and a war with Russian robots is just an excuse, because the real subject is movement: standing still means dying, and survival depends on how long you can keep moving without overheating the suit.

The combat is a showcase of ingenuity. Enemy robots have exposed weak points, break apart piece by piece, and change behavior once you shoot off their head or limb. There are only a few weapons, but all of them upgrade by collecting duplicates and suit different situations. The game comes alive most in fights against giant opponents, where you need to alternate attacks, recharge the suit, and use the surrounding obstacles. The overheating system acts as a clever safeguard against abusing slow motion, forcing the player to judge when they can afford to risk it and when they need to pull back.

On PlayStation 3 the game runs briskly, and its metallic, blue-gray aesthetic focused on sparks, smoke, and explosions still feels very clean today. At the time it received enthusiastic reviews from critics but flopped commercially, a common fate back then for Japanese action games aimed at Western audiences. The campaign is short, playable in a single evening, but it's built for replaying, for refining your approach and chasing high scores. Vanquish still holds the reputation of one of the best-playing third-person shooters ever made, and its pace has few successors. Anyone who gets into its rhythm once and learns to chain slides, dodges, and precise shots will find that few action games offer a similar feeling of movement, regardless of generation.
