MAG

FPS 2010 Zipper Interactive ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h

An ambitious online-only shooter for up to 256 players in a single battle.

MAG was one of the most ambitious attempts ever made in the shooter genre on consoles: it was a purely online title in which up to two hundred fifty-six players could take part in a single battle at once. The plot revolves around private military companies, and right at the start the player picks one of three factions, which differ not just in gear and weapon appearance but in overall tone, ranging from a well-equipped Western unit through a technologically advanced group to an improvised Eastern European army with battered equipment.

To keep such a huge number of players from collapsing into pure chaos, the developers built the game around a military hierarchy. Players formed squads, squads belonged to platoons, and above them stood commanders who issued orders, marked targets, and unlocked support abilities for their entire group. Anyone who followed orders earned more experience, which very cleverly motivated even random players to stick to a shared plan. Battles had phases: first break through the defense, then destroy inner objectives, and finally capture the base's core, so the map opened up and changed as the fight progressed.

Technically it was a remarkable feat, since keeping that many players on a single server was unheard of on console at the time; visually, though, the game sacrificed detail for it and looked rather plain. At the time it received a mixed reception, with critics praising the scale and team-based design but faulting a lackluster feel to the shooting and chaotic early matches. The servers were later shut down, so the game is unplayable today and remains mostly a historical footnote. That's exactly why it's worth remembering as one of the boldest experiments of its generation: it showed what an online shooter could look like when it doesn't try to be an arena for individuals but an actual battle with a front line, a chain of command, and the feeling that the player is just one small piece of a much larger clash. A similarly generous attempt hasn't been repeated on consoles for a long time.
