The entry that set the series' direction for years to come; its star is an unpredictable pirate leader.

Far Cry 3 is the entry that gave the series the shape it still holds today: an open tropical island, a player with no combat experience, and a slow transformation into someone who gets a little too used to killing. Spoiled young Jason Brody falls, along with a group of friends, into the hands of pirates who control the archipelago and must free them one by one. But the real star is the unpredictable pirate leader, whose monologues about madness rank among the best-written passages in the entire series and were a major reason the game stuck in players' memory.

The world is densely packed with activities. The player takes over enemy camps, which can be cleared quietly with a bow and knife or blown apart, releasing caged animals onto the guards; once a camp is captured the surrounding area calms down and new tasks open up. Radio towers unlock parts of the map, hunting animals is used to craft bigger pouches and bags, gathering plants is used to brew potions, and earned experience unlocks skills recorded as tattoos on the hero's arm. The shooting is precise and satisfying, fire spreads across vegetation, and guard AI allows for improvisation, so every attack turns into a slightly different story.

On PlayStation 3 it's clear the game was pushing the hardware to its limit: the image is softer and the frame rate dips, yet the view of jungle, sea, and sunsets remains striking. At the time the title received very favorable reviews and became a commercial success that set the template for a number of later open-world games from the same publisher. Today Far Cry 3 is still a brisk and surprisingly free-form action game, whose main strength lies in how easily a planned strike turns into chaos you have to handle on the fly. A tiger appearing in the middle of a camp raid, burning grass changing the direction of the assault, or a badly aimed grenade can turn a careful plan into a desperate dash through the jungle, and it's exactly these moments that produce the best the game has to offer.
