A broken hero from New York in a dazzling São Paulo; the tone stays just as weary.

Max Payne 3 moves the burned-out New York cop to São Paulo, where, as a washed-up bodyguard for a wealthy family, he gets tangled up in kidnappings, corruption, and a street war between gangs, militias, and police units. The snowy noir New York gives way to a dazzlingly sunlit Brazilian city, favelas, nightclubs, and port warehouses, and yet the game keeps the same weary, self-lacerating tone narrated in Max's voice. The character himself is the subject of irony here: shorn, drunk, and disgusted with himself, he comes across more as a wreck than an action hero, which gives the story surprising weight.

The gameplay is built on the series' famous bullet time and a sideways dive with slowed-down time, which this game embeds in unusually convincing physical animation. Max really does land wherever you send him during a dive, stays lying there, and has to fight back from a position on the ground; enemy hits visibly affect their movement, so firefights feel raw and unpredictable. Added to that are cover mechanics, elaborate weapon handling that Max visibly carries close to his body, and a final slow-motion shot at the gunman who killed him. The campaign was accompanied by a competitive multiplayer with its own modes and gradual loadout unlocking.

Technically it was one of the most visually polished titles of its generation on PlayStation 3, with striking lighting, cinematic color filters, and a seamless transition between cutscenes and gameplay, so the game never loads behind a black screen. Reception was very favorable, with criticism aimed mainly at its linearity and the amount of non-interactive footage. Today Max Payne 3 stands out precisely for its craftsmanship: the shooting, animation, and atmosphere of unbearable heat and hopelessness make it one of the best-aged action games of its era. The firefights still carry such weight and precision that many players return to them just for the feel of the guns and how convincingly enemies react to every hit.
