PlatinumGames
PlatinumGames is a Japanese studio renowned for action games built on precise combat systems, exacting timing, and a bold visual style. It grew out of teams that defined the character action genre in Japan, and it remains one of the few studios able to build a game purely around how well it plays – without an open world, crafting, or the endless grind that characterizes most big action titles today. Titles like Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance became synonymous with stylish, fast, technically demanding combat and influenced an entire generation of action games. For fans of the genre, PlatinumGames is a mark of quality, even though the commercial success of individual games has often failed to match their artistic ambitions.
History
PlatinumGames was founded in 2006 in Osaka, in part by former Capcom developers who had previously been behind the shuttered Clover Studio – creator of games like Okami and Viewtiful Joe. That experience with a bold visual style and inventive game design became the foundation of the new studio's identity. Its first major release under the new name was MadWorld for Wii – a stylized black-and-white bloodbath that showed the studio could bring brutal action even to a console aimed at a broader audience. The real breakthrough, though, was Bayonetta in 2010, which quickly ranked among the generation's best action games and launched a long-running series. The same year saw the release of Vanquish, a sci-fi shooter emphasizing speed and tactical sliding, which, despite modest commercial success, earned a cult reputation.
The studio further defined itself through collaborations with major publishers on other companies' franchises – Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was made in partnership with Konami and showed the team could stamp its style even on someone else's license. Similarly, The Wonderful 101 for Wii U combined action with an original idea of controlling heroes by drawing shapes. Its relationship with Nintendo produced the sequels Bayonetta 2 and 3, exclusive to Wii U and Switch, while a collaboration with Square Enix on Nier: Automata in 2017 gave the studio one of its greatest critical and commercial successes, thanks in part to a striking story and music that went beyond the usual action game. Later, the studio also tried its hand at its own intellectual property, such as the action game Astral Chain for Switch, which linked the player character's combat to controlling a supernatural companion on the other half of the screen.
Key People
The studio is closely tied to the name Hideki Kamiya, one of its co-founders, who helped establish the character action genre back in the days of Capcom and Clover Studio and, at PlatinumGames, was behind the creation of several key titles, including Bayonetta. Alongside him, other experienced creators from the Japanese action scene, who had followed a similar path through Capcom and Clover Studio, contributed to the studio's distinctive visual and gameplay signature, which allowed PlatinumGames to keep a recognizable style across the various franchises and publishers it has worked with over the years.
Today
PlatinumGames continues developing action games today while also working long-term to establish its own intellectual property independent of contract work for major publishers, which in the past has helped the studio survive periods when several internal projects failed to make it to release. It remains one of the few specialists in the character action genre, and even after all these years its name is, for players, a guarantee of quality and a fluid combat system – though the road to long-term financial stability hasn't always been easy, and the studio has had to lay off staff and cancel projects in the past. Even so, it remains a name that action game fans associate with a high craft standard and the courage to try unconventional game mechanics.
