Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction

Platformer/Shooter 2007 Insomniac Games Ratchet & Clank ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h

The first Future installment pushed PS3 visuals toward detailed, richly realized worlds.

The first installment of the Future sub-series brought the duo Ratchet and Clank into a new chapter after a mysterious alien race called the Cragmites destroyed the home planet of Lombax, and the hero sets out to find answers about his origin and the fate of his species. Insomniac Games used the transition to PS3 for a significant graphical leap, with richly detailed worlds, dynamic lighting, and fluid action combining shooting from a fantastical arsenal of weapons with platforming elements and puzzles using Clank's abilities.

Weapons upgrade themselves through use and change shape and effect, motivating the player to rotate through the entire arsenal instead of relying on one favorite gun. Alongside classic action, there were also sections controlled by tilting the Sixaxis controller, whether piloting flying inventions or directing a tornado summoned by one of the weapons. Clank's solo sections, aided by tiny beings called Zoni, allow slowing time or briefly flying, offering a calmer, puzzle-oriented counterbalance to Ratchet's firefights. The series managed to preserve its characteristic humor and exaggeration, while the story took on a more serious, epic tone tied to uncovering Ratchet's past.

Critics praised the fun gameplay, inventive weapons like the famous Groovitron, and cinematic presentation, making the game one of the technically most impressive platformers of early PS3. Tools of Destruction demonstrated how an established series could successfully transition to a new console generation without losing its identity, and it cemented Insomniac Games' position as one of Sony's most reliable internal studios alongside later successes like Resistance or Spider-Man. The game was also the first in the series to fully exploit the Blu-ray disc's potential for seamless loading between planets without visible breaks, enhancing the feeling of smooth travel across the galaxy and becoming a technical model for later entries in the series.
