Gran Turismo 6

Racing simulator 2013 Polyphony Digital Gran Turismo ⏱ Very long · 30+ h

Over twelve hundred cars and the GT Academy project linking the game to real-world racing.

Gran Turismo 6 launched near the end of the PS3's life and offered over twelve hundred cars and more than a hundred tracks, including the newly added Silverstone circuit and an expanded career mode inspired by real automotive challenges. Polyphony Digital responded to criticism of its predecessor with improved driving physics, a smoother interface, and the ambitious GT Academy project, which linked virtual racing to real motorsport careers for players discovered through competitions. The game also experimented with space missions in collaboration with NASA and offered a more elaborate economy and car subscription system, which sparked controversy among part of the community over microtransactions.

The changes showed most in the small details that hold a simulation together: a reworked tire and suspension model gave clearer feedback when transitioning into a slide, the menus reacted more briskly, and loading between races no longer broke the rhythm of play as much. The career was divided into series by performance class, complemented by quick driving challenges, so the player could alternate between long circuit stints and short few-minute disciplines. Updates adding famous tracks like the full-length Nürburgring Nordschleife and support for a newly developed virtual steering wheel showed that Polyphony Digital was still pushing the boundaries of driving simulation available on an aging-generation console even years later.

Critics praised the breadth of content and improved gameplay over the fifth installment, even though it was already clear at the time that development was running alongside preparations for the new console generation, and part of the audience was looking more for a technological leap than a refinement of the existing foundation. Gran Turismo 6 nonetheless became a dignified closing chapter for Gran Turismo's long era on PS3 and showed that Polyphony Digital could, even after years, still offer the most content-rich racing simulation on the market. It secured the series a firm place among the best-selling exclusive brands on PlayStation, and to this day it remains one of the most complete car catalogs a console has ever hosted.
