WHAT TO PLAY
First-person shooters
240 games in the catalog
A first-person shooter puts you behind a character's eyes: the weapon sits at the bottom of the screen, the crosshair in the middle, and the world turns wherever you look. The idea is simple, see, aim, fire, which is why so much could be built on top of it, from mazes full of coloured keys to story campaigns and team matches over a network.
The roots go back to the 1970s, when Maze War and Spasim circulated on university networks. Wolfenstein 3D (1992) and above all Doom (1993) brought the genre into shops: Doom spread as shareware, supported network play and let people build their own levels. Through the 1990s, similar games were simply called Doom clones; today it is a genre of its own, with subgenres of its own.
It lasted because someone kept pushing it somewhere new: 3D accelerators, mouse and keyboard, online servers, console controllers, and now battle royale and games run as a service. Speeds and rules change, the view through the character's eyes stays, and it still takes a player only a few seconds to understand the game.
Today (2015 onwards)
58 games in the catalogAfter 2015 the weight shifted to games run as a service: free to play, in seasons, on several platforms at once. PUBG and Fortnite (both 2017) popularised battle royale, where a single survivor remains on a large map, and Call of Duty: Warzone (2020) took on the same mode. Overwatch (2016) combined the shooter with characters who each have different abilities. Doom (2016) and Titanfall 2 (2016) went for fast movement instead, Titanfall 2 with running along walls. VR shooters such as Superhot VR arrived, and smaller indie games revived the old style.

The HD generation (2005–2014)
100 games in the catalogWith the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 came HD and a change of rhythm: health regenerated on its own, players took cover and aimed down the sights. Call of Duty 4 (2007) moved the series to the present day and added ranks and unlockable gear to multiplayer. Battlefield 2 (2005) offered large maps with classes and vehicles, and Left 4 Dead (2008) co-op with a "director" system that paces the enemies. BioShock (2007) showed a shooter could carry a story about a city. On phones, the first touch-controlled shooters arrived, such as Dead Trigger (2012).

The arrival of 3D (1995–2004)
70 games in the catalogQuake (1996) built its world from real polygons, so you could aim up and down and levels had true floors stacked above one another. With the first 3D accelerators, mouse and keyboard control settled into the layout that still applies in essence today. Half-Life (1998) told its campaign without cutscenes, entirely from the player's viewpoint. Consoles had to solve aiming without a mouse: the analogue stick and aim assist on the Nintendo 64 (GoldenEye 007, 1997) later led to twin-stick control with Halo (2001). New subgenres appeared, such as war shooters (Medal of Honor, 1999) and immersive sims like System Shock 2.
PC Battlefield Vietnam
The 1942 formula transposed into the Vietnamese jungle; Huey helicopters play a key role.
PS2 Call of Duty: Finest Hour

Storytelling without a single cut, and the gravity gun, which redefined shooter gameplay.
Xbox Halo 2
It kicked off the online multiplayer phenomenon via Xbox Live and dual-wielding weapon controls.
PS2 Killzone
Sony marketed it as an answer to Halo, which set exaggerated expectations and led to mixed reactions.
PC Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault
The war series moves to the Pacific; a greater emphasis on story and relationships within the unit.
Xbox The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
One of the biggest surprises of the generation; a movie license that ended up defining the genre.
PC Call of Duty
The first entry in the famous series; three national perspectives on World War II and loyal squadmates.
8- and 16-bit (1986–1994)
11 games in the catalogComputers of the time could not draw real 3D space, so games used a trick: walls were drawn as vertical strips from a map on a square grid, while floors and ceilings stayed flat. That is how Catacomb 3-D (1991) and Wolfenstein 3D (1992) from id Software worked, with levels built as mazes of corridors, keys and secret walls. Doom (1993) added floors at different heights, walls at any angle and lighting that varied by area, plus multiplayer over a network. Consoles such as the Jaguar or 32X only got cut-down versions, as they lacked the power for it.
Jaguar Alien vs Predator
A genuinely horror atmosphere in a 3D shooter; the game can be completed from three different perspectives.
DOS CyClones
It offered independent mouse aiming; the player shoots sideways without changing walking direction.
DOS Doom II: Hell on Earth

DOS Rise of the Triad: Dark War
A choice of five agents with different speed and stamina; the weapons are utterly over the top.
DOS Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold
A secret agent infiltrates a mad scientist's laboratories across six episodes.
DOS Doom
Released at the end of 1993, it pushed forward the genre its own creators had founded a year earlier.
3DO Escape from Monster Manor
A horror shooter through a mansion full of ghosts and traps; instead of soldiers, you shoot at skeletons.
DOS Spear of Destiny
A standalone prequel episode to Wolfenstein; twenty-one levels in one go.
DOS Wolfenstein 3D
In 1992 it practically defined the FPS on PC; an agent fights his way through a Nazi fortress.
DOS Catacomb 3-D
The missing link between early action games and the rise of the FPS on PC; magic bolts instead of a rifle.
