Destiny is the project through which Bungie, creator of the legendary Halo, bet on merging a first-person shooter with an MMO structure and treating the game as a long-term service, following its departure from Microsoft. Guardians defend the last human city, protected by the mysterious Traveler, against dark forces spread across the solar system, with gameplay combining the precise, satisfying shooting typical of Bungie with a loot system inspired by MMO titles - colorful light spraying from fallen enemies that instantly signals the rarity of the loot. Each of the three Guardian classes, Titan, Hunter, and Warlock, offers its own set of abilities and supers, so players naturally specialize and complement each other in a group.
The Vault of Glass raid, requiring six players to coordinate without any in-game explanation of its mechanics, became an iconic example of the community discovering, documenting, and sharing strategies on its own. A whole layer of guides, spreadsheets, and voice channels grew up around the game, without which the hardest content was practically impossible to clear. Visually, the game bet on monumental, silent ruins of abandoned colonies on the Moon, Mars, and Venus, which, combined with the subdued ambient soundtrack, create a peculiar feeling of loneliness even in the middle of a shared expedition.
At launch the game faced criticism for its thin, underdeveloped story and repetitive endgame content, yet players poured enormous numbers of hours into it thanks to its addictive shooting core and the social aspect of clans and shared patrols. The design of the weapons and their satisfying visual and audio feedback on impact still stands among the genre's benchmarks today, a testament to the experience gathered over years of developing the Halo series. Successive expansions - The Dark Below, House of Wolves, and especially the extensive The Taken King - substantially reworked the character and reward systems, helping to turn initial disappointment into a respected game-as-a-service, which lasted until the full sequel Destiny 2 and defined the looter-shooter genre for the entire next decade.
