Metro 2033 Redux

FPS / survival horror 2014 4A Games Metro ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h

A reworked release built on the Last Light engine; same story, smoother shooting and AI.

Metro 2033 Redux is a 2014 complete overhaul of the original Metro 2033 from 2010, built on the improved 4A Engine that had since been created for Metro: Last Light. The story, characters and missions stayed the same - Artyom makes his way through a Moscow metro infested with mutants and faces the conflict between the Red Line and Nazi factions, including mysterious creatures called the Dark Ones - but the gameplay, shooting and artificial intelligence were completely reworked to the standards of the newer title, so the game feels much smoother, more precise and less clunky than the original, which has aged considerably by now. The lighting, character animations and some level sections that suffered from confusing layout and unclear player guidance through the dark metro tunnels in 2010 were also reworked.

On the PlayStation 4, then a brand-new console, Redux ran at significantly higher resolution and frame rate than the original Metro 2033 on PS3 or Xbox 360 - it was one of the titles from the early transition to the new generation that clearly showed the leap consoles had made over the previous generation. Players could choose between the survival-oriented Spartan mode, closer to regular action, and the much harder Ranger mode with limited ammo and minimal on-screen information, just like on the other platforms Redux released on, whether standalone or as part of the Metro Redux compilation alongside the remastered Last Light on a single disc.

Content-wise, the PS4 version is identical to the Xbox One and PC releases - the same missions, the same endings and the same bonus chapters beyond the 2010 original. The difference from PC was in the fixed, known hardware with nothing to configure, thanks to which the game ran stably on PS4 from the start without having to deal with compatibility with a particular setup or graphics tuning before playing, as PC players are used to with their varied configurations.

Why play it: For players who don't want to deal with graphics settings or compatibility like on PC, the PS4 version offers the same content, including the bonus chapters beyond the 2010 original - stable from the very first launch.
