The long-awaited return to the Zone; a shooter mixed with harsh survival and anomalies.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is the long-awaited return to the Zone around the Chernobyl power plant and one of the few major titles to launch on console exclusively for Xbox Series X|S. The game blends a first-person shooter with survival elements: the player tracks hunger, fatigue, equipment condition, and radiation exposure, and every trip deeper into the Zone means deciding what to carry. Space-warping anomalies, packs of mutants, and hostile factions force careful route planning, since even an ordinary firefight can end with an empty magazine and a broken weapon hundreds of meters from the nearest shelter.

The open world is vast and deliberately inhospitable, with abandoned villages, industrial complexes, and underground facilities where the pace shifts into claustrophobic horror. Artifacts hidden within anomalies are the main economic motivation, but carrying them comes at the cost of radiation exposure. Technically the game runs on Unreal Engine 5 and offers impressive lighting, fog, and dynamic weather; storms and nighttime treks without a flashlight rank among the game's strongest atmospheric moments. Sound carries the tension — the crackling of the detector, distant footsteps, and wind in the treetops do more than any music could.

Development took place under extraordinarily difficult conditions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, when the studio had to relocate part of its work abroad, and the mere completion of the project was met with respect. Contemporary reviews were positive but cautious, given the game's technical state at launch and bugs that were fixed through extensive updates. The influence of the original trilogy on the Eastern European school of survival games is unmistakable, and the second installment continues in that spirit. Today it stands as one of the most distinctive major titles of this generation: demanding, at times uncomfortable, but with an atmosphere hard to find elsewhere. Anyone who accepts its rules and stops expecting the Zone to be forgiving will get an experience that big studio shooters rarely offer — a game in which returning to the trader with a full backpack of artifacts is a genuine victory.
