An alternate USSR that has mastered robotics; a special glove freezes and lifts enemies alike.

Atomic Heart builds on an alternate version of history in which the Soviet Union mastered robotics in the 1950s and built a utopian society full of automatons — until the machines turn against people. The player takes on the role of an agent sent into a sealed scientific complex and progresses through a mix of shooting, melee combat, and abilities granted by a special glove. It can freeze enemies, lift them into the air, or strike them with electricity, and combining force and element forms the basis of the combat system. Weapons are crafted and upgraded from materials collected in the environment, so exploration genuinely pays off.

The world consists of tight laboratory and testing-complex interiors linked by a more open outdoor area, where flying drones patrol and the player must choose between a quick dash and a fight. The art direction is the game's greatest asset: retro-futuristic aesthetics combine monumental statues, mosaics, and wood paneling with chrome robots, creating an environment unlike anything found in other shooters. The music is a mix of electronic tracks and rearranged period Soviet songs that feel unsettlingly contrasting during moments of carnage. On Xbox Series X|S the game runs smoothly and offers a performance-focused mode.

Reception was mixed, but with clear respect for the ambition of an independently-minded studio. Reviewers praised the visual identity, the inventive bestiary, and the combat system, while criticism pointed to sprawling dialogue, uneven pacing, and outdoor sections that lacked the density of the interiors. The game found a large audience and became one of the most talked-about titles of the year. Today it stands as an interesting alternative to conventional shooters — technically solid, visually unmistakable, and distinctive enough to be remembered even years later. Anyone who enjoys a setting that tells its own story even without characters will explore the complex with interest, even once the combat itself stops surprising them.
