The Czech and Slovak games category is not held together by one fictional world or one studio, but by a national scene that pushed forward from the mid-1980s despite limited resources. It began with domestic ZX Spectrum and Didaktik Gama clones, around which a generation of self-taught coders grew up writing games in assembly and Basic and passing them around on cassette tapes among friends and computer clubs. There was no commercial market or distribution to speak of, so this was a hobby driven by enthusiasm rather than business - but it laid the groundwork for skills that would pay off a decade or so later. Czechoslovakia's split into two countries in 1993 formally divided the two scenes, yet Czech and Slovak creators kept trading ideas and people and largely kept working as one.

The 1990s and the turn of the millennium brought the first professional studios and international hits on PC. Illusion Softworks made its name with the tactical shooter Hidden & Dangerous and above all Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven, a gangster story that proved a Czech game could carry a narrative as strong as a Hollywood film - the series continued through Mafia II and further sequels, with the successor studio 2K Czech involved along the way. Bohemia Interactive launched its own genre of raw military simulation with Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, Pterodon followed with Vietcong and its sequel set in the jungles of Southeast Asia, and Altar experimented with real-time strategy in Original War and turn-based tactics across the UFO trilogy. What united them was a commitment to authenticity and a willingness to go against the grain of the dominant American studios of the time.

Bohemia Interactive's military line kept growing through further ARMA entries and the DayZ mod, which turned from a fan project into a standalone game released in 2013 and helped kick off the survival genre before others picked it up. Warhorse Studios then showed that a Czech team could pull off an ambitious RPG as well: Kingdom Come: Deliverance set its story in medieval Bohemia with a focus on historical accuracy and an unforgiving combat system, and received a sequel, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, a decade later in 2025.

Alongside the war and history titles, a quieter, more personal strand took hold. Amanita Design made Czech games famous worldwide with its poetic adventure series Samorost, Machinarium, Botanicula and Chuchel, where imagery and music carry the story instead of dialogue. SCS Software, after early titles such as Rig'n'Roll, found its own international niche with the Euro Truck Simulator and American Truck Simulator series, which became synonymous with the genre and have stayed popular for years. Beat Saber by Beat Games became one of the best-selling VR titles ever, was acquired by a major foreign company, and proved that a small Prague studio could set the direction for an entire new gaming medium.

The Slovak scene added its own accents - from the Žilina studio Cauldron, which worked on a string of licensed console and action games for international publishers through the 1990s and 2000s, to Bratislava's Pixel Federation with its browser and mobile titles for a broad audience. Across generations, from ZX Spectrum cassettes through DOS games on PC-9x machines, gaming magazines and the 1990s demoscene, all the way to titles for PS4, PS5 and Xbox One, the common thread stays the same: an emphasis on atmosphere and story, craftsmanship on limited budgets, and a willingness to experiment with genres the big studios left alone.
