A tactical counter-terrorism series adapted for consoles; a milestone of the early Xbox Live era.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3 brought Tom Clancy's tactical counter-terrorism series to Xbox in a form specially adapted for the console, becoming one of the most significant milestones of the early Xbox Live era. The player commands the elite Rainbow unit, plans out assaults against terrorist cells, and must proceed with extreme caution, since unlike typical action shooters of the time, a single inaccurate step or hit here means instant death for the character with no quick in-mission respawn.

The emphasis on realistic weapons, the need for coordination with AI-controlled and human teammates alike, and the carefully considered placement of enemies inside buildings set the series apart from more arcade-like competitors. Progress unfolds mostly in tight interiors, where the outcome hinges on who spots the other first: the player issues simple commands to teammates, opens doors slowly or kicks them in with a thrown grenade, and switches to night vision in darkened rooms. The console version stood out above all for its support of voice communication through a headset plugged into the controller, letting players coordinate their advance in real time—something practically unheard of on consoles in 2003.

The online multiplayer offered both cooperative and competitive modes for dozens of players and became one of the pillars of the growing Xbox Live community in its early days. Rainbow Six 3 thus not only successfully adapted a demanding tactical genre to a gamepad, but also helped define the standard for online team play on consoles, shaping the direction of the whole series and the military tactical shooter genre. The subsequently released expansions Black Arrow and Athena Sword added more missions and kept the online community active long after the base game's release. The slow, nerve-wracking pace, where an entire mission can be lost in a single second, still feels convincing today.
