Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege abandoned the traditional campaign and bet everything on a single idea: five attackers versus five defenders in an enclosed building, with no respawns, where a single mistake means the end of the round. Attackers must find and secure the objective, while defenders get time to prepare, barricading doors, reinforcing walls, and placing barbed wire and traps. The result is a game that plays more like chess with a rifle in hand than a classic shooter, since the outcome is often decided by information, not reflexes.
Destruction is key. Most walls, floors, and ceilings can be shot or blown through, so a room can't be defended just by watching the doors, and an attack can come from above, below, or through a wall the defender never suspected. Every operator has unique gadgets, from breaching charges to drones, cameras, shields, and electronics jammers, and their combinations create an enormous range of situations. The reconnaissance drone at the start of the round and cameras scattered across the map make observation a discipline of its own. On Xbox One the game runs smoothly, relying on readable environments and precise sound design that lets you gauge floor and direction of footsteps.
The launch was rocky due to technical issues, harsh difficulty, and limited content, but Ubisoft supported it for years, adding operators, reworking maps, and gradually turning it into one of the most respected competitive titles of its era. Its influence on the genre is huge, proving that a high-skill tactical shooter can work on consoles and sustain a long-term competitive scene. Today Siege is still alive, though it can give newcomers a rough time at first. Learning map layouts, defender habits, and dozens of operators' abilities takes a lot of hours, but the reward is an experience with no equal in the console lineup. Every round is short, tense, and decided by seconds, so even a loss usually carries a clear lesson.
