Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon from Red Storm Entertainment, co-founded directly by writer Tom Clancy himself, brought to Xbox a realistic vision of modern warfare tactics built around commanding a small special forces unit fighting across more open terrain than the corridor-based action of the era. The player deploys four to eight soldiers into formations, uses terrain cover, coordinates fire at range, and must reckon with the fact that a single accurate enemy hit can take a soldier out of the fight, creating tension entirely different from the fast arcade shooters popular at the time.
The emphasis on long-range gunfights, tactical positioning, and mission planning was ahead of its time and became a template for later tactical games across the genre. The map in the corner of the screen is used to issue orders to the second and third squads, so the player alternates between the role of commander and rank-and-file soldier, and it's not unusual for a key firefight to be won by the sniper without the player firing a single shot themselves. Soldiers also gain skills like accuracy or toughness between missions, so losing a veteran squad member hurts in the long run too. The Xbox version benefited from the power of what was then the strongest console on the market and was among the first games to fully make use of online play via Xbox Live, extending tactical cooperation beyond split-screen.
Ghost Recon is set in a fictional scenario of the former Soviet Union's collapse and a nationalist coup, reflecting the era's geopolitical anxieties of the nineties carried over into the game medium. The title's success launched a long-running Ghost Recon series that branched into numerous sequels and expansions over the following years, and the original remains valued as one of the forefathers of the modern tactical shooter. Being able to switch between soldiers and directly influence the outcome of a firefight in real time gave the game a strategic depth appreciated even by players who otherwise preferred faster action titles.
