Star Wars: Republic Commando
Star Wars: Republic Commando offered an unusually raw look at the war between the Republic and the Separatists in 2005, playing out far from the usual Jedi heroics. The player commands a four-member clone commando squad codenamed Boss, Scorch, Fixer, and Sev, trained on the planet Kamino as an elite unit meant for the dirtiest missions. Rather than solo heroics, tactical command sits at the heart of the game: simple orders let you direct the squad to hold a position, repair a droid, or plant explosives, while your squadmates react to the environment on their own even without the player's input.
The entire command system runs through a single context-sensitive button and points marked directly in the environment, so giving orders never slows the pace of the firefight. The user interface is also part of the fiction: the player sees the world through a helmet visor streaked with raindrops or enemy blood spatter, and armor damage shows up as cracking glass. The level design takes the squad from a droid-occupied orbital ship through the swamps of Geonosis to an infested cargo vessel, where the atmosphere feels closer to military horror than a classic Star Wars adventure. The sound design, including team chatter and lines that react to the state of the mission, gives the squad an unusual sense of cohesion.
The LucasArts title was built on the id Tech 3 engine, modified for squad-based action, and the result was one of the studio's best-reviewed games of the era. The developers drew on consultations with special-forces tactics experts, which shows in how accurately the game simulates the risk of close-quarters combat in the tight corridors of starships and bases. Although it never received a direct sequel and its open ending was left unresolved, Republic Commando has kept a devoted fanbase to this day thanks to its grittier, military take on the license and its exceptionally functional command system, and it is still cited as an inspiration for later tactical titles.
