An exclusive Xbox version of the psychological horror game with the bonus scenario Born from a Wish.

Silent Hill 2 from Konami is generally ranked among the most significant psychological horror games ever made, and its expanded version, Restless Dreams, released exclusively on Xbox in 2001, added a new bonus scenario, Born from a Wish, to the original PlayStation 2 release, telling the events from the perspective of the mysterious character Maria. The main story follows James Sunderland, who arrives in the fog-shrouded town of Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his wife Mary, who has already been dead for three years.

The town gradually turns into a symbolic labyrinth of guilt, depression, and repressed memories, with both the enemies and the environment directly reflecting James's psyche. The gameplay is deliberately uncomfortable: combat is clunky, ammunition is scarce, and thick fog combined with the flashlight's limited reach forces the player to move slowly and listen. The game's most iconic figure became Pyramid Head, a monster with a triangular helmet and a massive sword, whose appearance and role in the story gave rise to one of the most recognizable horror characters in the medium's history. The sound design by composer Akira Yamaoka, full of industrial tones and silence broken by static, heightens the constant sense of threat.

Restless Dreams also added developer commentary and other small extras, making it the most complete version of the game available, and for Xbox owners it was the only legitimate way to experience this acclaimed work. The game avoids easy explanations and lets the player interpret the symbolism of the monsters and the multiple possible endings according to their own behavior, making it a work critics and academics keep returning to when discussing storytelling in video games. Silent Hill 2's influence on the psychological horror genre remains evident today, and few later titles have managed to bring atmosphere, music, and the theme of personal guilt together into such a cohesive whole.
