Famous Star Wars battles from the perspective of an ordinary soldier, on large maps across four factions.

Star Wars: Battlefront from Pandemic Studios was built with a clear ambition: to let players experience the saga's famous battles from the perspective of an ordinary soldier rather than a lightsaber-wielding hero. The game offers large-scale maps inspired by iconic locations such as snowy Hoth, the forest moon of Endor, the desert world of Tatooine, and the capital city of Coruscant, where four playable factions clash - the Rebel Alliance, the Galactic Empire, the Republic's Clone Army, and the Confederacy of Independent Systems.

A system of controlled battles built on capturing control points and a limited pool of team lives creates a dynamic where a seemingly lost battle can be turned around with a quick counterattack. Before each respawn, the player chooses from several classes, from the standard trooper to a heavy-weapons specialist countering vehicles to a sniper specialist, allowing you to react to how the fight is currently developing. Players can also commandeer vehicles, from ground-based AT-STs to X-wing and TIE fighters, giving the battles a scale that matches the films. The campaign guides you through both major eras of the saga with short briefings, and moving from one planet to the next feels like a series of chronicle entries from a galactic war.

Battlefront emphasized accessibility and atmosphere over realism, which made it a popular choice for split-screen multiplayer as well as online play over Xbox Live. The weapon sounds, music lifted straight from the films, and unit models were drawn directly from Lucasfilm materials, giving the game an authentic feel. Thanks to the console's performance, the Xbox version handled a higher unit count on screen better than the concurrent PlayStation 2 release, cementing the Xbox's reputation as the platform with the strongest graphics hardware of the generation. Commercial success led to the sequel Battlefront II that same year and established a brand the industry would return to a decade later in a reimagined form from DICE.
