A remake of the 1998 classic with an over-the-shoulder view instead of fixed cameras.

Resident Evil 2 is a complete remake of the 1998 classic, which Capcom built on the modern RE Engine and transformed from fixed camera angles into a fluid over-the-shoulder view, without losing the claustrophobic horror atmosphere of an infested Raccoon City. The player takes on either rookie police officer Leon S. Kennedy on his first night shift, or student Claire Redfield searching for her brother, with both scenarios—so-called Scenario A and B—offering interlinked yet distinct perspectives on the same zombie- and mutated bio-organic-weapon-filled night.

A key innovation is the enemy known as Mr. X, a giant trench-coated pursuer who, once a certain point in the game unlocks, roams the police station freely and continuously, actively hunting the player, creating tension entirely different from classic scripted jump scares. His heavy footsteps, audible through walls, became one of the most-cited sound motifs of modern horror and force the player to plan both their route and their escape route ahead of time. The zombies themselves also take a surprising amount of punishment, and individual shots visibly tear their flesh, so the player weighs whether every opponent is even worth the bullet.

A system of limited ammo, key-and-puzzle-item conundrums, and a sophisticated inventory with limited capacity carries on the traditional survival horror design of the original series, while realistic lighting and detailed character models give the horror unprecedented visual intensity. The police station itself functions as an interconnected labyrinth full of shortcuts that gradually open up to the player, turning the repeated back-and-forth from a chore into a routine; the map system from the original also returns, color-coding rooms that still have something left to collect. The game also includes bonus scenarios with Ada Wong and Hunk as unlockable content after completion. The Resident Evil 2 remake is widely regarded as one of the best-executed remakes in the history of the medium and defined the direction the series' subsequent remakes would take.
