Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard marked a decisive turn for the series back to pure horror atmosphere after several more action-oriented entries, achieved through a fundamental shift in perspective to first-person, which intensifies the sense of immediate danger. The player steps into the role of Ethan Winters, who after years of searching for his missing wife Mia finds her in the decrepit, mold- and rot-overgrown mansion of the Baker family in remote Louisiana, where he faces mutated family members endowed with near-indestructible regeneration.
The level design returned to the series' traditional roots with an interconnected, enclosed environment full of locked doors requiring specific key items, limited ammo, and careful inventory management, while the game also supported a full experience in virtual reality on the PlayStation VR platform, though the Xbox One console version offered conventional controls. Combat is deliberately slow and uncomfortable: Ethan is not a soldier, weapons reload clumsily, and the knife attack serves mostly as a last resort. Healing via mixed fluids and saving progress on cassette tape recorders further give the game an old-fashioned rhythm.
The atmosphere combines a found-footage aesthetic of videotapes the player discovers and plays back as flashbacks revealing the family's previous victims, with a claustrophobic cat-and-mouse game against patriarch Jack Baker in the game's first half. The soundtrack relies more on silence, creaking wood, and distant footsteps than on music, keeping tension alive even in rooms where nothing is happening, and the safe rooms with their music box feel like genuine relief. The RE Engine graphics engine debuted here and set the visual standard for all of Capcom's following titles for several years. Resident Evil 7 is considered a successful return of the series to its horror roots and one of the most frightening mainstream titles of its generation.
