The entry that finally opened up the Japanese series to the West with seamless hunting grounds.

Monster Hunter: World was a breakthrough entry for the long-running, historically Japan-focused series, opening it up fully to Western audiences for the first time thanks to seamlessly connected hunting grounds without the earlier division into separate zones, and a clearer, more accessible explanation of its complex systems for newcomers. The player becomes a hunter attached to a research commission investigating the periodic migration of ancient dragons in the New World, with the core of the game remaining the hunt for giant monsters using fourteen distinct weapon types, from massive Great Swords through nimble Dual Blades to Hunting Horns that support allies with musical buffs.

Each weapon has its own set of moves, speed, and way of maintaining an advantage, making weapon choice feel more like picking a character class than swapping out equipment. After successfully hunting a monster, the player gathers its materials to craft new armor and weapons, creating the signature hunt-and-craft loop that made the series famous, especially in Japan, well before this installment. The hunt itself begins with preparation: the player tracks footprints, uses scent to locate prey, and sets traps or stun bombs.

A new feature was the dynamic weather and ecosystem, in which various monsters can attack one another, something the player can exploit tactically by luring a larger predator onto their opponent. Cooperation among up to four hunters on a single expedition dramatically eases the fight against the toughest monsters and forms the core of the series' social experience. Visually, the game showed surprisingly dense, lively environments even on Xbox One, albeit at the cost of occasional frame drops during the busiest fights. The hub of Astera also serves as a shared gathering place where hunters meet, upgrade their gear, and plan the next expedition. The later Iceborne expansion added new snowy regions, monsters, and mechanics. Monster Hunter: World became the best-selling title in Capcom's history and dramatically expanded the brand's global popularity beyond Japan.
