Destiny 2 is a sci-fi looter shooter from Bungie, creators of the original Halo series, combining fast, precisely tuned shooting with a long-term loop of collecting ever-better gear and gradually building up one of three Guardian classes—Titan, Hunter, or Warlock. The story picks up from the first game with the destruction of humanity's last bastion, the Tower, by the invading Red Legion force led by Dominus Ghaul, forcing the player to rebuild the Guardians' strength from scratch.
The game stands out for its elaborate, regularly refreshed world with dynamic public events, demanding six-player raids requiring complex mechanical coordination, and the competitive Crucible mode for PvP-focused players. The raids in particular became the title's high point: without voice communication and role division they are practically impossible to complete, and their first clears are followed by the community like a sporting event. The key draw remains the tangible, satisfying feel of the shooting, which critics and players alike have long called one of the best in the genre, complemented by a sophisticated system of classes, grenades, and supercharged ultimate attacks.
Bungie gradually moved from paid expansions to a seasonal content model and eventually to the free base game New Light, making the game accessible to a far wider audience, though at the cost of repeated criticism for removing older content from the game. Expansions such as Forsaken, Shadowkeep, and Beyond Light gradually expanded the game's mythology around the Darkness and the Light as opposing cosmic forces and added new areas and abilities. The game's lasting atmosphere is also helped by its orchestral music and art direction blending sci-fi with almost sacral motifs, making even ordinary hunting grounds feel more like pilgrimage sites than shooter backdrops. Destiny 2 became one of the longest continuously live-supported online titles on Xbox One, with an active community lasting years after release.
