Need for Speed: The Run
Need for Speed: The Run departed from the purely circuit-based racing the series had long been known for, offering instead a story-driven sprint across the entire United States from the west to the east coast of the continent. The main character, Jack Rourke, enters an illegal race from San Francisco to New York to pay off a debt to dangerous gangsters, so the player isn't just driving separate individual circuits but a single continuous route through changing environments, from deserts through mountains to the snow-covered city streets of major metropolises.
EA Black Box also worked sequences taking place outside the car into the game — on-foot escapes accompanied by fast-paced quick-time events, where the player reacts to on-screen prompts during tense chases with gangsters or police on their tail. These passages alternate with the driving sections and serve both as a breather and as a way to tell the story outside the vehicle's cabin as well. This hybrid of racing and cinematically staged action was unusual for the series and split players between those who appreciated the cinematic showcase and the varied environments, and those who instead missed the purely racing focus of the series' earlier entries. The driving itself, however, remained fast and arcade-like, with an emphasis on drifting and dangerous maneuvering in heavy traffic at full speed.
The game's graphics engine also allowed it to display vast landscapes stretching from horizon to horizon and to shift them smoothly as the race progressed through the route's various time zones and seasons. The Run also became the last game developed by EA Black Box, the studio behind a number of the series' earlier entries, before it was closed shortly after this game's release and its team disbanded. Today, the game also functions as a symbolic closing note on an era of the Need for Speed brand, one in which the series was searching for new ways to breathe life into traditional arcade racing through cinematic storytelling and a changing route, before it headed in other directions under the guidance of other studios.
