Persona 4 Arena

bojová hra 2012 Arc System Works Persona ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h

A 2D fighting game from the creators of Guilty Gear and BlazBlue, where the fight is decided by both the power of your Persona and your reflexes.

Persona 4 Arena is a 2D fighting game from Arc System Works, a studio that approached the Persona series as a specialist in the fighting-game genre from Guilty Gear and BlazBlue. Characters from Persona 3 and Persona 4 face off in a story set shortly after the end of the fourth game, competing in a mysterious tournament where the strength of their Persona decides the outcome of a fight just as much as the player's reflexes. The combat system is built on combining a character's classic attack with an attack summoned from their Persona, giving each character a different rhythm of play and setting it apart from fighting games where characters attack only with their own hands and weapons.

Besides the fights themselves, the game features an extensive story mode with a large amount of dialogue, which in scope resembles a visual novel interspersed with action battles, as well as an arcade mode for quick matches and an online mode with leaderboards. The Xbox 360 was one of the two launch platforms – the game came out on the same day on the PlayStation 3 – and there are practically no differences between the versions. The graphics, frame rate, and scope of the story mode are identical on both consoles, as is the entire playable character roster and their costumes. The only real difference lies in the online infrastructure: Xbox 360 owners played online matches and leaderboards through Xbox Live instead of the PlayStation Network, which mainly affects who the player encounters online.

The Xbox 360 version therefore makes the most sense for players who have built up a community on this console and prefer its online services or controller. In terms of content and gameplay, it is in no way a diminished release – it is a fully-fledged alternative to the PlayStation version, which was not always a given for fighting games released in parallel at the time, and it made it easier for many fans to decide which console to get Persona 4 Arena on.

The choice of platform can thus be purely a matter of personal controller preference, not a compromise on content. Interestingly, this was one of the few Persona titles to ever appear on Xbox at all – the main RPG entries remained tied to PlayStation consoles, so this fighting spin-off gave Xbox 360 owners a rare opportunity to experience the world of Inaba without having to buy another console.

Why play it: For fans of fighting games and the Xbox controller, this is a rare chance to experience the world of Inaba without having to buy a PlayStation, since it is one of the few Persona titles ever released on Xbox.
