Need for Speed: Carbon
Need for Speed: Carbon added nighttime canyon duels to the series, where players followed a rival's racing line through the hairpin turns of guardrail-less mountain roads, along with a territorial system for controlling city districts that gradually unlocked new shops, parts, and rivals, with individual city areas divided by driving style into canyon, drift, and circuit zones. Players could also assemble a crew of teammates with different abilities who helped during races and police chases by blocking opponents or drawing police attention away. Cars could be customized in a detailed body-kit editor, which had long been one of the series' signature features.
The Xbox 360 version launched alongside the other platforms in late 2006 and ranked among the most technically advanced available versions of the game — higher-resolution textures, denser city traffic, better lighting on night streets with reflections on wet asphalt, and a more detailed damage model than on the older Xbox or PlayStation 2. The core gameplay — the canyon duels and territorial system — stayed the same across all platforms; the difference lay mainly in the graphics, smoothness during heavier traffic, and the quality of the reflections on car bodywork during nighttime city driving.
The Xbox 360 version also benefited from the already well-established and proven Xbox Live online service for consoles, which offered more stable and broader online play than older consoles, with easier matchmaking and clearer leaderboards across regions. For players wanting to experience Carbon in the best form available for that generation, the Xbox 360 version, alongside the PC edition, represented the technically most advanced choice at the time, without offering any exclusive content over the other platforms, since content-wise it was an identical game across consoles, with the same body-kit and vinyl editor.
Why play it: For players seeking more stable online fun through Xbox Live, the Xbox 360 version, alongside the PC edition, offered the most advanced form of the game, though content-wise identical to the older consoles.
