A prequel starring Baird and Cole, told as testimonies at a military tribunal.

Gears of War: Judgment returns to the beginning of the war with the Locust and puts the duo of Baird and Cole, characters who had until then merely accompanied the trilogy's main hero, front and center. The whole campaign is framed as a military tribunal: members of Kilo Squad testify one by one about what happened, and the individual missions are essentially their testimonies. Each section opens with a short comment from the soldier giving testimony, so even side characters get a spotlight they never had before. This gives the narrative momentum and also a good excuse for splitting the game into short, sharply cut segments that can be played in one sitting or in co-op.

Gameplay-wise, this is the biggest shake-up of the formula in the whole series. Missions carry star ratings and point scores, enemies spawn in variable locations, and so-called Declassified challenges offer optional difficulty spikes: limited time, thick smoke, only one weapon. Loadouts have also shrunk to two weapons, pushing players to improvise with whatever happens to be lying on the ground. Alongside classic competitive multiplayer comes the OverRun mode, in which one side builds fortifications and the other plays as the Locust with distinct roles; it's an inventive twist on Horde, just with a human opponent. The main campaign is followed by a bonus chapter set during the climax of the third game, returning players to familiar settings from a different angle.

Technically the game stays within the boundaries Gears established for itself: sturdy cover mechanics, weighty movement, active reload, and a very dark palette with sharp lighting. The atmosphere is boosted by an emphasis on the noise of battle and hefty orchestral undertones. At the time the game was received as solid but the least essential entry in the series; reviewers praised the fresh, arcade-like approach to missions while regretting the shorter campaign and reduced epic scale. Today Judgment is mainly of interest to players looking for Gears as a fast shooting challenge with scoreboards.
