The reins pass to new studio The Coalition; the story jumps 25 years forward, with JD Fenix.

Gears of War 4 marked the handover of the reins from Epic Games to the newly founded studio The Coalition, and at the same time a generational leap in the story, twenty-five years into the future. The new lead character is JD Fenix, Marcus's son, who alongside Kait Diaz and Del Walker fights not only the new threat known as the Swarm, but also the authoritarian COG government he once served as a soldier. The return of an older Marcus to the plot gives the narrative a more personal, family-driven dimension that the original trilogy lacked, and a darker, less parodic tone underscores the sense that the war on Sera never truly ended.

The core of the series remained untouched — the cover system, the brutal chainsaw Lancer, active reload, and the emphasis on team tactics in the cooperative campaign. The Coalition added a dynamic tornado that reshapes the battlefield, tears away cover, and sweeps enemies away, along with new robotic opponents called DeeBees, whose behavior differs markedly from the organic Swarm: they break apart piece by piece, are harder to finish off, and force players to change the rhythm of firefights. The Unreal Engine 4 graphics engine pushed the series to a new visual level on Xbox One, with detailed textures, realistic lighting, and elaborate weather particle effects; the scenes where a windstorm tears apart sheet-metal structures and reshapes the passability of an entire arena rank among the campaign's most striking moments.

The multiplayer offered the classic Versus mode as well as a reworked Horde with ten character classes, their upgrades, and the placement of defensive structures around the mobile Fabricator, turning the cooperative mode into a game of role division and resource management. A new collectible card system for weapons, skills, and skins became the foundation of the reward economy for later entries in the series as well. The game was also among the first titles to fully support Xbox Play Anywhere, letting players enjoy it on both console and PC with a single purchase and shared progress. Gears of War 4 thus proved that the series could work without its founders, and laid a solid foundation for the rest of the new trilogy.
