Condemned: Criminal Origins

Horor 2005 Monolith Productions ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h 🔞 18+

An Xbox 360 launch horror game; agent Ethan Thomas investigates murders in an abandoned city.

Condemned: Criminal Origins was among the first games available at the Xbox 360's launch and remains the best argument for why it made sense to get the console right away. The player takes on the role of Agent Ethan Thomas, a serial-murder investigator falsely accused of a crime he didn't commit, who moves alone through the abandoned buildings of a decaying city. A subway, a department store, a library, a burned-out school: each location is a study in neglect, mold-stained walls, and flickering fluorescent lights.

The game is presented in first person, but shooting is a rarity here. Ammunition can barely be replenished, so for most of the game the hero grips a pipe, a plank, an axe, or a torn-off shop-window bar, and combat turns into tense close-quarters grappling with blocks, strikes, and kicks. The opponents aren't supernatural monsters but feral humans who hide around corners, circle around you, and pretend to be just another mannequin against the wall. Progress is also frequently held up by ordinary obstacles that need to be pried open or smashed, and it's in those moments that the tension peaks. A second layer is forensic work: using a camera, a detector, and UV light to gather evidence at crime scenes, which gives the story a detective-fiction backbone.

Technically the game felt like a demonstration of the new generation, especially thanks to the detailed interior textures and lighting, where it was genuinely assumed the player would see only the cone of the flashlight. Sound does even more work, though. Creaking, distant screams, and footsteps shuffling in the next room manage to induce dread better than most jump scares. The game keeps a brief log of evidence found and items hidden throughout the levels, encouraging players to search every corner. At the time it was praised for its atmosphere and close-quarters combat, with reservations about the story's ending. Today Condemned stands as a reminder of an era when horror dared to be dirty and uncomfortable.
