One of the toughest action games of the generation; Ryu Hayabusa against a demonic conspiracy.

Ninja Gaiden II ranks among the toughest action games of its generation and arrived on Xbox 360 as an exclusive that showed no mercy toward player comfort. Ryu Hayabusa pursues a demonic conspiracy across Tokyo, mountains, and hellish landscapes, and his journey is essentially an unbroken series of clashes where a single moment of carelessness means death. The combat system builds on a combination of fast slashes, charged strikes, and instant dodges; blocking is possible, but the game clearly rewards movement and aggression. Between chapters you can also restock potions and upgrade weapons at a merchant, the only moment of calm the game allows.

The key new addition is the so-called obliteration technique. Wounded enemies lose limbs but still keep fighting, and the only effective solution is to finish them off with a special attack that also briefly shields you from your surroundings. Combat thus gains a rhythm: cut them apart, finish them off, dodge, repeat. The arsenal is unusually varied, ranging from the classic sword to scythes and claws to ranged weapons, and each has its own set of combos unlocked through upgrades. The game runs fast and sharp, impressively handling large numbers of enemies at once for its time, though the camera in tight spaces is among its most frequently mentioned weaknesses. Alongside the story, it also offers standalone arena challenges centered purely on survival against waves of enemies.

The atmosphere is dominated by rawness. Blood splashes across walls, the music alternates between drums and dark orchestral passages, and the bosses are massive even by genre standards. At the time the game earned praise for its combat and criticism for its camera, uneven difficulty spikes, and rocket-launcher enemies deployed in awkward moments. Later versions on other platforms toned down some of the brutality, so the original Xbox 360 release remains the rawest version of the game. Today Ninja Gaiden II is above all a test of patience and reflexes.
