Lost Planet: Extreme Condition
Lost Planet: Extreme Condition sent players to the frozen planet E.D.N. III, where colonists fight not only over territory but above all for warmth. The central mechanic is a thermal energy gauge that constantly drops; it serves both as fuel for special abilities and as a secondary health bar. Energy can only be replenished by killing the local insectoid fauna called Akrid or by collecting canisters, so the game constantly pushes the player forward and won't let them linger in the snowy wasteland. The story follows a hero searching for the giant Akrid responsible for his father's death, gradually uncovering the interests of major corporations along the way.
Combat combines third-person shooting with two elements that make the game distinctly its own. The first is a grappling hook that pulls the hero onto ledges and quickly repositions him, the second are giant mechs called Vital Suits, which can be boarded, rearmed, and abandoned mid-fight if needed. Weapons can be moved from one mech to another, so your loadout shifts based on what enemies leave behind. Boss fights are among the best parts: giant Akrid have clearly readable weak points, and you fight them in open arenas under the constant pressure of dwindling heat. Collectible data posts reveal the surrounding map and ease navigation across the vast snowy plains where it's otherwise easy to get lost. The campaign was complemented by a solid multiplayer for its time, featuring mechs and grappling hooks.
Technically it was the flagship of Capcom's new engine, and it showed. Swirling snow, fog, and vast snowbound vistas were impressive on consoles of the time, and the game was often used as a showcase of what Xbox 360 could do. Sonically, the roar of metal and the howl of wind dominate, while the music keeps a mostly serious, cinematic tone. Contemporary reviews were largely favorable, with reservations about the simpler story and clunkier character controls. Today the game stands as a witness to the transition to a new generation, notable above all for the idea that the environment itself is your greatest threat.
