An exploration-focused metroidvania that proved a downloadable game could be a full-fledged experience.

Shadow Complex was one of the titles that, during the boom of digital storefronts, proved a smaller downloadable game could feel like a full-fledged experience. It's an exploration-based action platformer in the style now commonly called metroidvania: the hero falls into a sprawling underground complex, gradually finds equipment that opens previously inaccessible paths, and the map unfolds before him like an interconnected maze full of shortcuts and hidden nooks.

The standout feature is the way the game combines two-dimensional movement with three-dimensional space. The character moves along a flat plane but can aim and shoot into the depth of the scene as well, so enemies attack from floors above you and from distant catwalks. The upgrades are classic and satisfying: a double jump, a suit that allows wall-breaking, a grappling hook that pulls the hero upward. On top of that come grenades, rockets, and foam that can seal enemy gun ports, and the game assumes most obstacles can be overcome in several different ways. Boss fights rank among the toughest sections and often revolve around finding weak points in the scene's background layer. The game keeps a clear tally of collected items and exploration percentage, which, combined with its short length, encourages repeated speedy playthroughs.

Technically it was one of the best-looking games of its type on a console of that era, built on what was then a modern engine and offering a fully spatial environment lit with sharp lights and shadows. The sound design leans on industrial echoes and tense underscores, so even an ordinary corridor feels like a place where someone is waiting for you. At the time the game was highly rated and often cited as proof that a long-dormant genre still had plenty to offer. After finishing the story, additional modes open up as well, including the option to fly through the entire complex again with full gear from the very start. Today it can be recommended to anyone who loves interconnected maps and the feeling of truly earning their way out.
