Fallout 3
Fallout 3 brought the legendary post-apocalyptic series into a fully three-dimensional open world and became one of the defining RPGs of the entire generation. As the Lone Wanderer, the player leaves the underground Vault 101 and heads out into the devastated Washington, D.C., known as the Capital Wasteland, to search for a missing father and uncover a conspiracy surrounding a water-purification project. Bethesda Game Studios brought its proven Elder Scrolls recipe into a nuclear future full of mutants, bandits, and dark humor referencing 1950s aesthetics. The game's opening ranks among the best-written in the studio's catalog: the character is built up gradually, from birth through a childhood aptitude test to the escape from the Vault, so distributing S.P.E.C.I.A.L. points feels like part of a life story.
The V.A.T.S. system allowed players to pause time and target specific body parts of enemies, elegantly combining action shooting with tactical RPG decision-making while also masking the less precise first-person shooting. The freedom of exploration, dozens of side quests with moral dilemmas, and the engaging radio companionship of DJ Three Dog created an unforgettable atmosphere of both destruction and hope. The game also offered a karma system affecting how factions reacted to the player's behavior, from the volunteers of Megaton to bounty hunters who set out after an evil wanderer on their own. The sprawling metro system beneath the city served as a slow, claustrophobic transition between districts, giving the ruins of Washington a sense of scale that an open map alone could never carry.
Critics praised the depth of the world and the freedom of choice, even though it technically suffered from occasional bugs typical of Bethesda, from characters getting stuck to crashes on older hardware. The released expansions later removed the original ending and the level cap, and added expeditions into swamps, frozen Alaska, and a spaceship, turning the game into one of the most comprehensive packages of the generation. Fallout 3 won Game of the Year awards and sold millions of copies, bringing the series to a mass audience and definitively setting the direction Fallout would follow in later installments, including New Vegas and Fallout 4.
